Fibroids on an ultrasound scan: is surgery always needed?

Seeing “fibroid” in an ultrasound report does not automatically mean surgery is the next step. Here are three points to discuss with your gynaecologist.
Not every fibroid needs treatment.
If it is not causing symptoms, treatment may not be necessary. Discuss this with your doctor.
Size is only part of the picture.
The number and location of fibroids, bleeding, pain or pressure, other health conditions and your priorities also matter.
Your plans should help shape the decision.
Ask about the benefits, risks and alternatives to the proposed treatment, including its possible effects on a future pregnancy.
A question for your consultation: “What would the proposed treatment change for me, and what other options are there?”
